Googlitis – Google Keyword Tool
Welcome to part two in this series where I share with my friends and readers my experiences from my illness which I have called Googlitis. One important point that I would like to make here before we move on is that while Googlitis is a disease it can be controlled and you can even benefit from it greatly if you treat it with respect and give it the attention that it deserves.
This is the reason for my series on Googlitis. Not to scare you or claim that there is a cure because if you are an internet marketer you know full well that there is no cure. My objective here is to help you control and gain respect for a condition that affects so many of us and to illustrate the benefits of the disease once that said control and respect are attained.
That said on to this weeks Google Tool!
Google Keyword Tool.
Ahhhhhhh yes, the Google Keyword Tool! Many of you have no doubt heard of this tool and I bet ya that you have used it from time to time as well. If you have … well done, it’s an excellent Start to your keyword research and best of all it is free! Even if you have used this tool before you may not be using it correctly. There are a few rules which you should be following when you’re doing your research and I will go though those in this article and short video.
If you’re new to online marketing then perhaps you haven’t tried Google’s Keyword Tool yet and if that the case then you’re going to love this article, the tool, and of course me for sharing it with ya!
First let’s show you where you can find this Google wonder!
Google Keyword Tool
Now that you’ve found it let’s watch this short video where I explain the proper way to use the tool.
Lets Recap:
Keyword Research is a two step process.
First you need to discover how many searches there are for a particular keyword. (Your keyword should have over 2000 Global Monthly Searches.)
Second you need to find out how much competition does that keyword have. (Your keyword should have less then 60 thousand results.”
The Golden Rule: We want keywords that get a high amount of searches but a low amount of competition.
Remember that the Google Keyword Tool should only be the start of your keyword research. While the Google keyword tool is awesome, as is everything Google … it does it’s limitations.
1. Google Ads tool results are based on Adwords so it is best for researching PPC keywords, not organic search for SEO.
2. Searches can vary too much each day or each month, the searches some months can be higher or lower depending, so it is actually tricky to target a search term that has high searches one month and then the following month has low searches.
This is why we need to dive a little deeper when we are conducting keyword research. In my next article I will show you three other Google Tools, Google Insights, Google Competition, and Google Trends which will help us find the perfect keywords for our blog posts and articles!
I hope that you have enjoyed this article on the Google Keyword Tool and have found it of value. If you feel that this article will benefit others with Googlitis then please pass this on to those in need! Thanks so much!

Hello Kevin,
Great video. Always good to see how what knowledgeable internet marketer go about with their keyword selection. You’re right about google keywords being an excellent start to keyword research and I think I too may be suffering from Googlitis.
Keep the Smiles,
Stevie
Hey Kevin,
Your title of Googlitis was intriguing enough for me to want to comment!
Yes, I do use Google Keyword tool, and you’re right about its limitations, which happen to be pretty big if one only wants to use organic traffic.
Also, they’re all Google specific. I find that tools like Keyword Ninja can be of great help for more advanced keyword research.
Yasser Khan
Hey Yasser,
Thanks so much for stopping by my place and leaving a comment, that’s awesome!
Yes as mentioned in the article Google’s keyword tool does have it’s limitations. You should use it only as a quick reference. A start, if you will towards deeper keyword research using tools like keyword ninja, keyword winner, and one of my personal favorites, traffic travis!
Thanks again Yasser for visiting my blog and I hope to see you back sometime soon.
Kevin
Hello Kevin,
The google keyword tool is great, it seems the keyword tool of choice and comes highly recommended.
I came across a report on using Market Samuria with it.
It seemed that using MS along with the GKWT could open up some really kool and amazing tricks with keywords and page rank.
Thanks for sharing
Cheers
I also like the google link wheel for brain storming ideas for keywords.

I also use Google’s Keyword Tool, I think its the best FREE keyword research tool but Market Samurai can get you the most profitable set of phrases because of its SEO Competition report and other analysis report for advanced users.
Hey Willie,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog today, it’s always great to have you over!
I agree with you that the Google link wheel or “wonder” wheel is another great tool for keyword research. I was going to include the wonder wheel in this series however there are just too many awesome Google tools for me to mention them all in one series … perhaps down the road you will see a sequel!
Thanks again Willie for your comment and I hope to see you back real soon!
Kevin,

These are some great tips for the google keyword tool. I agree with Marquita though about being more specific with the tool. Clicking “Broad” “Exact” and “Phrase.” Thanks for sharing

Hey Marty and Lynda,
Thanks to you both for returning to my blog, I absolutely love having you ladies over.
You ladies make a good point … I did not mention in my article or on the video which type of search should we use when doing our keyword research.
I did leave that part out on purpose because the different search options whether it be “Broad,” Exact,” or Phase” all serve their own purpose depending on what keyword information you are looking for at the time. In the example on the video however I can tell you without question the search which I performed was “Broad.” I used the broad search because it will typically give you more keyword suggestions per search and since this was just a real quick exercise before diving into more in depth research more keyword suggestions was exactly what I was after.
Unless you’re doing PPC advertising through Adwords the Google Keyword Tool should of course only be used as a beginning to your keyword quest.
Again ladies, thanks so much for stopping by and I look forward to having you back real soon.
Kevin
I often advise people I work with, who are new to keyword research, to use the Google tool at first. There are some excellent advanced keyword research tools out there (Market Samurai is one) but the best use of them requires some study and a pretty significant learning curve. I feel that the Google keyword tool, used in combination with the other Google research tools you mentioned, is sufficient for the basic keyword research needs of most bloggers.

Hey Eldon,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog today, awesome to have you over!
I agree with you 100 percent Eldon, there are many other tools available to marketers which will produce better results and give a more in depth analysis of certain keywords. Market Samurai which you have mentioned is of course the industries most popular paid keyword and domain search tool however with more and more software coming out every other day I believe that while Market Samurai is good, it’s no longer the best.
As you stated Eldon, the Google Keyword Tool is a good start and great for beginners just starting out in this industry.
Thanks again for stopping by and leaving a comment Eldon and I hope that you will come back to visit real soon.
Kevin
Great article Kevin,
Sorry if I’ve missed this somewhere, but I would like to just add that it’s important to be aware of the type of keyword search – in otherwords the search results are likely going to be significantly different for a “Broad” search vs “Phrase” vs “Exact.” Look forward to your next article!
