The Art of Influence and Persuasion
A few months ago I did a guest post for a friend and fellow blogger from the TSA tribe Perry Davis on the Art of Influence and Persuasion. In our industry of Network Marketing it is our job to seek out people who are unhappy with their current situation of living and offer them solutions that best fit into their personal lifestyle and to help them achieve their goals which without our solution would not likely be attainable. It is our job then to listen, Influence, Persuade and guide others to help them realize their true potential and to help them attain what they so desperately want whether it be more money, more time with family, better health or greater respect among their family and friends. Many people falsely proclaim from the rooftops that Network Marketing has nothing to do with Selling. Make no mistake about it … if you are in this industry … then you are selling … and let me put your mind as ease … You are selling … and that’s o.k.!
In this day and age a sales person doesn’t get very far unless he/she listens to his clients, finds out what exactly they are looking for and then offers them the product(s) that best suits their needs.
Well … Network Marketing is no different.
What do your clients want? (Are you listening?)
Do they want more money?
More time with their loved ones?
Do they want to help those less fortunate them themselves?
Many Network Marketers today (especially online marketers,) do not take the time to truly get to know those to whom they are trying to enlist into their companies. Always remember … this is a people business … not a soap, magic pill, or coffee business. When we start to listen and understand others then we are in a lot better position to offer them the solutions that they often don’t even know that they were looking.
Below I humbly offer the article which I wrote for Perry several months ago on the Art of Influence and Persuasion and how we can use it for mutual benefit to help others make a positive change in their lives and in the lives of their families.
The Art of Influence and Persuasion
The topics of leadership, influence, persuasion, are vast and they have been the inspiration of many books, audio programs, and seminars throughout the years. One of the earliest masterpieces in this area is a book by Dale Carnegie. Yes, you know the one, “How to Win Friends and Influence people.” Although his book was written in 1936, 75 years ago, his book still has tremendous relevance in the world today. What does this tell you? Well it’s quite simple. It tells you that the ideas and strategies which are taught throughout the ages Work! The basic principles of success, leadership, influence are pretty much the same today as they were when Dale Carnegie wrote his book in the 1930′s. And they will be the same in another 75 years from now. I’m not saying that we can’t continue to learn and improve on these basic principles which of course we do. I’m only stating that we must acknowledge these basic principles and embrace them before we can build and shape them for our own success.
I want to start by explaining that there is a very big difference between the art of influence and persuasion and the art of Manipulation.
“Manipulation is inwardly focused on the outcome for the person doing the manipulation. Persuasion is externally focused on developing a win-win outcome where every one’s needs are met.” – Dave Lakhani
As leaders we want to be masters of persuasion not Manipulation!
In order for you to master the art of persuasion you first need to know the rules. As I stated above, one could write a book about the art of persuasion, (in fact several have,) so to condense it into a short article is always tricky. That said I just want to go over a few of the rules which you must follow if you wish to persuade and influence others in a positive way for both parties involved.
Rule #1: Prepare and Plan
“The mark of the serious person, or the real professional, in any field is that he takes far more time to prepare than the average. Great successes are often determined by attention to the smallest details. One fact, one inaccuracy, can make all the difference. And everything counts.” – Brian Tracy
Isn’t Brian awesome!
When you take the time to prepare and plan you will be more fluid in your thoughts and speech when explaining to others why one path is better than another. You will be in better control over the listener, and most importantly you will know precisely when to stop pushing!
Rule #2: Listen and Watch
“Want to be a strong persuader? Think Big Ears … Big Eyes … Small mouth” – Jim Randel
I don’t think that I need to go into too much detail here, Jim’s statement above pretty much says it all doesn’t it? Most of you reading this article know all about the 80/20 (Listen 80 percent of the time, speak only 20 percent of the time.) I just wanted to mention the importance of paying attention to people’s body language as well.
Rule #3: Create a sense of reciprocity.
Another quote, have you heard this one? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
People don’t like to feel indebted. When you do something nice for someone else, they feel obligated to do something nice back for you. That’s not so say that you should just go around and do everyone favors for the sole purpose of having them give something back to you. You must act with genuine sincerity which will build a relationship of mutual trust and respect between both parties.
Rule #4: Decisions are all about emotions.
If you get anything out of this article make sure that this is it! I believe the source of these next few lines are from the Network Marketing master himself, Mike Dillard.
Every single action and decision in your life
is based on attaining pleasure or avoiding pain!
AND
The desire to avoid pain is far greater than
the desire to attain pleasure.
This is why most people give into their fears and
never do what it takes to make it big. The perceived
pain of leaving their comfort zone is greater than
the pleasure of being wealthy.
Where would your business be if you didn’t run by emotion? If a no meant no different than a yes … You’d probably be a millionaire wouldn’t you, because you would just keep on going until you had all the yeses that you would ever need!
Rule #5: Persuasiveness is about integrity.
Integrity and Honesty is Always the best policy
Remember these three points.
- Deceit is transparent.
- It takes more energy to lie than to tell the truth.
- Karma: Whether you believe in it or not, you cheat people, bad things will happen to you.
As I said from the beginning persuading and influencing other is a vast topic and I have not even scratched the surface on the lessons which are to be learned and mastered on your journey towards success. What I hopefully have done is instilled that there are basic fundamental, consistent principles that you must learn and master and teach if you wish to be truly successful.

I AM RESPONSIBLE
I AM RESPONSIBLE!!!
My training specialty, my passion if you will, is to help my students gain the correct mindset and to focus on their own individual personal growth before diving straight into what many “mentors” will instruct their aspiring pupils which is to build a website and drive traffic to it. While getting traffic (customers) is the lifeblood of ANY business it should not be the place where many need to begin. Forget about the companies, the comp plans, the products, none of them really matter. (O.k. that’s a bit extreme but I wanted to make a point.) What does matter is YOU. How others perceive you and most importantly how you perceive yourself.
One of the first steps in your personal development training with me is that you must go to the tallest building in your city, take the stairs all the way to the rooftop, stand about one foot from the edge and shout at the top of your lungs … “I AM RESPONSIBLE.” (The alternative albeit far less exciting but a whole lot safer is to type “I AM RESPONSIBLE” in large bold print in a “word” or “open office” document, print off three copies and post one by your bedside, one on your dream board and one at a doorway exiting your home.) When you do this you are taking complete control back of your destiny. You are no longer going to blame a company, a sponsor, or ANY other person, place, or thing other then yourself for your failures. Instead you’re going to accept them as your own, learn from them, and use them as stepping stones towards your own success.
This is HUGE folks!!!
One of the most powerful quotes from a movie in recent years which really goes into identifying the power of taking responsibility and discovering your own unique values and beliefs is the following from the Dead Poet’s society. (I’m sure that you all remember these powerful words spoken by Robin Williams to his students who didn’t yet know how to think for themselves because of the extreme conformance they had to society.)
“We don’t live and breathe Network Marketing because it’s cute. We live and breathe Network Marketing because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But Personal Growth, Knowledge, Relationships, Teaching Others, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, “O me! O life!… of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless… of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?” Answer. That you are here—that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?” (O.k. … Maybe I changed it a little, Lol!)
If you would like to watch the original version with Robin Williams himself I’ve included the YouTube video below … Very Inspirational Indeed!
My point is this … Imagine that you have the ability to achieve any goal you could ever set for yourself (because you do.) Accept full Responsibility for your actions, and stayed committed to seeing your goals through to completion.
Setting Goals correctly is such an important part of the personal growth training which I go through with my students. We will talk more about how to set goals in future articles but in the meantime if you have the opportunity I highly recommend Bryan Tracy’s excellent book entitled Goals. You can also read some of my past articles on the subject here.

Mind and Emotions Training – “Within Your Own Mind Lies Your Greatest Triumph Or Absolute Defeat.”
Forgive me father for I have sinned. It’s been over a month since my last conversation. I can only imagine what you have all been going through over the past month … (and a half…) Waking up each morning, running to your computers with a nice hot cup of jo, going into your favorites and scrolling down until your mouse hovers over what your hand, shaking in excitement is about to click on. Your left index finger pushes gently on the trigger … the site opens … you don’t know whether it’s the extra shot of caffeine that you put in your coffee or the shear brilliance of the page which now stands before you … Kevin DeRoo’s Relationship Marketing Blog!
Alas, no new articles … Until Today!!!
So you may ask yourself, what has Kevin been doing with his time that he keeps us deprived of his brilliance? (Lol! Too much?)
Well, I’ll tell ya! At the beginning of this year I have started a new very exciting opportunity and have been very busy building a fantastic team that is growing each and every day. If you are on that team I want to say thanks for all your hard work, you guys (and girls) are awesome! One of my goals for this year is to help create 10 (or more) new Full Time Marketers (at least $20,000/year) by the end of 2012. We are well on our way and I have no doubt that we will not only reach this goal, but far surpass it. My coaching classes are absolutely free if you are partnered with me in one of my online programs.
Global NPN (The most complete suite of online marketing tools available all under one roof!)
Zeek Rewards (Fantastic opportunity backed by a 14 year company history where you can earn substantial income by simply placing one ad each day.)
Wow We (Complete video conferencing solutions for your business.)
O.k., I digress … please accept my apologies for not giving you new material in the last month … I give you my humble new offering to help ease your pain.
“Within Your Own Mind Lies Your Greatest Triumph Or Absolute Defeat.” – Kevin DeRoo
For those of you who already know me, you know that one of my favorite topics to discuss is Mind and Emotion Training! I wrote this article about one year ago and published it on my good friend Peter Chapman’s blog. I’ve made a couple of changes to the article to reflect the current day … (and fix a couple of spelling mistakes,) and I now present it to you again, this time on my own blog.
I’ve been involved in Network Marketing for many years both online and offline and like most people I have had my share of failures! Unlike most however I have also had some great success as well! In fact, on July 27th/2011 I took my Network Marketing business Full Time! (Wow, that’s been a dream for as long as I can remember!)
How did I make it? Well I kinda told you that in my first sentence, didn’t I? “I’ve been involved in Network Marketing for many years … and like most people I have had my share of failures!” But unlike most people … I Didn’t Quit!
I can hear what you’re saying … “I’m not going to quit either!”
Want a bet? … It may sound like I’m being a bully, but that is not my intention. It’s a fact, a very sad fact that out of every 100 people who are reading this article right now … yes right this very second, only a handful will be involved in this business 8 months to a year from now. You can use the thumb if you like, but that’s it. That’s 4 or 5 people out of every hundred that will make it in this business of Network Marketing.
Those are not very encouraging stats are they? Kevin, what are you trying to do? You’re going to scare everyone away. No one is going to want to start their own Network Marketing business if they know that there is an over 90 percent chance that they are going to fail?
Again … Want a bet? … They will continue to join and most will continue to quit. That’s just the way it is. There is nothing that either you or I can say or do that will change this centuries old human conditioning that is embedded into our society.
Or … Is there? To that question I have to answer Yes, and No! (You’re probably thinking, man this guy is no help at all! Lol!)
Yes we CAN change peoples conditioning IF, and that’s a big IF, they are internally committed to making that change within themselves!
In actual fact, no motivational speaker like Anthony Robins, Zig Zigler, or Jim Rohn can instantly turn you into a success. The only thing that they can do is introduce you to ways that you can change yourself! All the growth, all the change, has to come from within.
It’s like the famous quote from Emerson (one of my absolute favorites by the way,) “Nothing external to you has any power over you.” Powerful words indeed.
Although I had some success with online marketing before joining my primary company about two and a half years ago, it wasn’t until I fully engrossed myself in their “cult” training that I truly realized my success.
What training am I referring to you ask? The training of Mind and Emotion!
I truly believe that there is no more powerful training that you can have in this business, or any business then the training of Mind and Emotions!
Learn why people want your opportunity and Learn how to help them get what they want.
Learn why people say no to your opportunity and why you should always “follow up” with them later.
Learn why your biggest obstacle in life are your own emotions.
You will learn more in this business about other people and about yourself then you will in any other endeavor that you will ever undertake.
Many Network Marketing companies have this type of training and a lot of the time, the training is free. If your company does offer it then I suggest that you attend every training that you can. Even if some of the training is similar in nature it doesn’t matter … you need to be there! If you are already attending these trainings, that’s awesome! You’re making an investment (of time and or money,) and will continue to learn and grow from the training each and every week and as an added bonus you will be surrounding yourself with positive, motivated, like-minded people (and potential business partners,) like yourselves.
If your company doesn’t offer Mind and Emotion training then you must take it upon yourself to find the necessary resources for your own personal growth. The first place I would look is your local bookstore. Get yourself a book by Jack Canfield, Napoleon Hill, Brian Tracy, or so many other great authors. It’s an investment in your own education and growth, and you will soon see that you will be rewarded 100 fold for that investment.
If you can’t get to a bookstore then you can find ANY title online.
Here is where I go. It is by far the best place online to buy personal growth material. Jim Rohn.com
Again, for those who know me, you know that I like to say: “Grow yourself first, then your business will follow. Help others grow and your business will reach it’s true potential.”
I’m going to leave you with one of my own favorite quotes, I hope that you like it and I wish you much success and happiness in all that you do.
“Most people will continue to follow and not lead. Continue to live but not dream. Continue to plan but not act. Don’t follow on a path just because you found footprints in the sand or stop dreaming because someone told you that you were crazy. Most of all don’t refuse to act because your fear of failure is greater than your vision for success.” – Kevin DeRoo

Facebook Fan Pages
In our last article we talked about the differences between Facebook Profile Pages and Facebook Fan Pages. We distinguished that Facebook Fan Pages are the “business” side of Facebook and if you want to do any kind of social media marketing online you need to set up a Facebook Fan Page for your business. In this second long awaited article in this series we are going to go over how to set up a Facebook Fan Page and start driving traffic to your page.
What is our objective?
We want to build our fans at our Fan Page while at the same time sending some of those fans somewhere else, (ie: a Squeeze Page.)
Therefore there are Two Steps to getting traffic to your facebook fanpage successfully.
1. We want as many visitors as possible to visit our fan page and “Like It.”
2. As we build our fans – we start sending as many as we can to an external website.
First let’s create our Fan Page: From the Facebook log in screen
Click on “Create a page.”
Click on “Brand or Product.”
Under “Choose a category.” Click on Website
Then name your page. When you’re naming your page make sure that you choose a name that is spcific and unqiue to you. (ie you don’t want to be using tradmarked names etc and a name for your fan page or facebook could remove your page without notice.)
Once your page is created you can add a profile picture and add some pictures to your “Photo Stream” located at the top of your page.
Adding Content: The stickiness factor
Always try to have content that encourages people to actively communicate on your page. Some things that work well are asking questions, polls or surveys and having daily, weekly or monthly contests.
Great content for your site may include Pictures, YouTube Videos and Articles from various sources on the web.
You can find additional content within your niche by using the “Search” bar from within Facebook.
Remember the 50/50 Rule: This is where you should spend 50% of your time building your own Fan Page and 50% of the time on other peoples Fan Page leaving comments and interacting with other people within the same niche.
In our next article we will be going over how to set up a welcome page for your fans making your page more enjoyable for your fans and more profitable for you.
HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!
The End Of The World
If you’ve been to my blog before then you already know that I love to write with a touch of humor as it is as entertaining for me to write as I hope it is for you to read. For today’s article, through a power much greater then myself, I am forced to set aside any and all humor and share frankly with all my readers my visions of the impending danger that faces us all.
I was watching the news last week and they were featuring a special edition called “The End Of The World As We Know It.” Anyways, on the show they had different “experts” come on the program and explain why and how the world would indeed end on Dec 21st, 2012!
That’s only one year away!!!
The different disasters included such possibilities as a huge meteor falling from the heavens, a giant tidal wave engulfing the planet, and/or a massive earthquake which will destroy man kind as we know it today.
What utter nonsense … the end of the world WILL happen but it’s not going to be because of some huge rock falling from the sky or from a silly wave emerging from our Oceans … no, these types of disasters while tragic yes … man can and will recover from.
But there is one Disaster … one that makes these very hands shake as I type heroically to warn you of our upcoming doom.
What is it you ask? I think … if you search deep within yourselves, … you already know the answer to that question.
One morning … when we wake after a cold and restless sleep … it will be gone.
Here is a picture which reflects the almost certain outcome which draws closer every day.
That’s right, the eerie glow, the smell of death and disease, the lone man standing … (although I have no idea how Anyone could survive.)
These are the effects of only one event … the event which will end our existence and world will once again start anew.
One day … not too far in our future … it will be gone.
Facebook will be gone!
I know this is a lot to take in and if you can’t continue to read this article I completely understand … go and rest, count the precious days which we have left.
For those brave souls who wish to continue I applaud your bravery and will reward you by ending this silly little post shortly, Lol!
Before I do I want to introduce you to my next article series. Without any further delay … cause I think that there has been enough … my next article series will be on, … you guessed it … Facebook!!! I’ll be exploring Facebook personal pages, Fan pages, Welcome pages, and of course I’ll be showing you how you can be using these wonderful tools in order to build your business.
So please tell your friends, your family, and your business partners by sharing this article to visit my blog every hour and every single day in eager anticipation of the said event which I ensure you will happen … sometime before Dec 21st 2012! If you dare … please leave your comments below to let us know if or how you feel you would be able to survive …the end of Facebook.
Video Marketing – Uploading Your Production
Drum Roll Please … It’s time to let everyone see your masterpiece!
This is the third installment in my series on Video Marketing. In previous articles we looked at the different resources which are available to you to help make your videos great. We looked at the different software for Desktop Sharing which included the industry leader Camtasia Studio. We looked at devices for personal video like the Kodak Touch and the iphone. We also took a look at how to make great video content with my top 10 list for making quality videos. These tips included recording your videos in a quite location, the suggested length of your videos, and pausing for around 5 seconds when you make a mistake in your presentation for easy editing afterwards. Most importantly we discussed that your Video’s must have a Call To Action.
You can revisit either of these two absolutely fantastic articles here!
Now, for the moment that you’ve been waiting for … Uploading your videos!
Over 80 percent on online marketers upload their Videos to YouTube and YouTube only. This is fine but there are other options which are available to you and they present big advantages over the traditional YouTube platform. We will go over how to upload your video production from Camtasia to YouTube, however we’re going to spend a bit more time (because there is more involved) on how to upload your production to an alternative hosting site … Amazon S3!
The top three Advantages of Hosting your site with Amazon
1. Very inexpensive to host your images and videos (I’m talking Real Cheap, Lol!)
2. Your Website WILL load faster (increased performance) because it is not bogged down with large video files taking up precious bandwidth.
3. You have Complete Control over Video Content and no Outsider Logos branding your production.
There is a bit more to uploading your videos to Amazon however so there is a bit of a learning curve … but that’s why we’re here isn’t it! After all we should never finish the day with the same amount of knowledge that we had when we started it! So, Let’s get started with today’s learning!
Rather then reinventing the wheel I’m going to direct you to the same person who taught me about Amazon S3 in this Video Webinar below. You’ve heard me mention Chris Farrell before and he is without doubt my number 1 mentor for online marketing. This guy gives new meaning to the words “Giving Great Value.” The Webinar below is completely free and goes over uploading your videos to YouTube, Facebook, and Amazon S3 in great detail.
You will need to download the Webinar onto your computer before watching.

Video Marketing – Making it Picture Perfect
Making Your Video’s Picture Perfect
Last week we talked about the many different software options which are available to you as you embark into the wonderful work of video marketing. We talked a little bit about Camtasia, Jing, and Screen Flow for Mac users. We also took a look at a couple of portable video devices such as the Kodak Touch and of course the iphone which we can use to do our personal presentations. The most recent iphone has an eight mega pixel camera and takes amazing video indeed!
This week I would to take a look at Video Content! I would like to take a look at the different types of video which we will be making, why we make videos in the first place, and I want to give you my Top Ten List for things to pay attention to while you’re making your video masterpieces. In Video Marketing we only have 4 seconds to catch our viewers attention … We have to make those seconds count!
First let’s take a look at the two most common types of video which we will be using in our Video Marketing journey. The first type of video is educational in nature. These videos are training presentations that you can make to educate your team on the different aspects of online marketing. The second type of video is a “sales” video. This obviously is a video which can be found on a squeeze page or a sales page encouraging the viewer to buy the product or service which you are promoting. The sales video is usually much shorter then the training videos but both types have one thing in common … they both have a very clear and distinctive Call To Action!
One more thing I would like to point out before I give my Top Ten List is that if you have never done Video Marketing before and you feel a little nervous just thinking about partaking in such a task don’t worry one little bit … THIS IS NORMAL … YOU ARE NORMAL! Whenever we embark on something new we get a little scared, a little nervous, and we think that there is no way we can make a professional video and even if we do there is no way anyone is going to want to watch it! Well this couldn’t be further from the truth. If you have something of value to share, (and you do,) then people Will watch your videos and appreciate you for making them … Even if you mess up a little! Also I want to ensure you that if you don’t get everything perfect in the first take … That’s Normal Too! If you don’t get it right by the 8th take … Normal! If you’re still not happy after the 30th take … frustratingly normal, Lol! If you don’t get it right by the 200th take … O.k. now you may have some issues! Lol!
Enjoy this Top Ten Video which I produced for your viewing pleasure … in just around 20 takes!
To review here is my Top Ten List
1. Record your videos in a quiet location with no background noise.
2. Have a plain background such as a plain white wall or partition if you are going to be shown on the camera
3. For best video use a good quality headset.
4. Remove cell phones and turn off Skype etc to eliminate distractions.
5. Speak slowly and clearly and have a glass of water right by your side!
6. Move your mouse slowly and make deliberate, distinctive actions when clicking on links and web pages.
7. Pause for at lease 5 seconds after you make a mistake.
8. Training Videos should be between 5 to 8 minutes in length. Sales Videos should be between 2 to 3 minutes
9. Sit up Straight and Smile
10. Must have a call to action
Link for Camtasia learning center
Well that’s it for this week, now it’s time to have some fun and make some awesome videos! Just remember, it’s o.k. to be nervous and it’s o.k. when you make mistakes … what’s not o.k. is letting your fear of perhaps venturing outside of your comfort zone stop you from your own personal growth and your success. Next week we will be concluding this series on Video Marketing by showing you a few different techniques which you can use to get your video live in front of millions of eager viewers!
I hope that you have enjoyed this article and short video on how to produce some great videos for your raving fans. I would really appreciate it if you did find value that you share this article with your family, friends, and business partners by clicking on any of the share buttons located around this article.
Video Marketing – You Oughta Be In Pictures!
Little did I know just a few short years ago that my childhood dream would one day come true … I would be in the movies!
O.k. maybe not Hollywood Movies … perhaps not movies at all. But short entertaining, informative video clips … That’s me! Lol!
Today we’re going to dive into another one of Kevin DeRoo’s famous blog series! I know, you’re already excited aren’t ya … well so am I! I’m excited because I’m living my dream. Thanks to Network Marketing I no longer have to work for someone else. No more commute every morning in ridiculous traffic. No more stress about project deadlines and bureaucratic red tap. No more is my life scheduled around my job now my passion is scheduled around my life!
My passion as you all know by now is Network Marketing and helping others achieve success in the greatest industry in the world. One of the tools which we use in Network Marketing, online marketing in particular is of course Video! We use video on our blogs, squeeze pages, sales pages, and newsletters. Using video gets more traffic to our websites, produces more sales because of greater conversion, and is simply the very best way to build relationships with people even if they are thousands of miles away.
This video series will comprise of three short articles and videos (of course) covering video tools, content, and getting your videos live available to millions of viewers across the globe. In this first short video we’re going to take a look at some of the tools which we need to make our masterpieces. Below the video I will place links where you can go to check out and download the recording software of your choice which you need in order to make quality video presentations. These are not affiliate links. They are direct links to the different resources which are available.
Here is a direct link to my April/2011 article highlighting some of the options that are available for Screen Capturing Software.
Here are the Links to the other software options that I have mentioned in the video.
Camtasia
Jing and Jing Pro
Screen Flow
Kodak Play Touch
Now that we have our tools we are ready for the next article in this series where we are going to talk more about the content of our videos. The audio, the formatting, the editing, etc.
If you enjoyed this article, would like to know how to get Camtasia for free, or you would like to recommend some screen sharing software or video production hardware then I would love to hear from you. I would also really appreciate it if you would share this article with your family, friends, and business partners by clicking on any of the cute little “like” and “share” buttons located around this article.
